Alford Avenue Animal Hospital provides emergency veterinary services for dogs, cats, and a wide range of exotics including birds, reptiles, amphibians, exotic companion mammals, arachnids, and pot-bellied pigs during our regular working hours. Dr. Burke has worked in multiple veterinary emergency rooms in our area, including regular relief shifts at nearby Steel City Emergency Vets. Before moving to Alford full-time, Dr. Cooner was the medical director for a hybrid general practice, subspecialty referral, and emergency and critical care hospital. Our doctors’ wealth of experience in urgent and critical care is put into action any time a patient requires emergency care.
Emergencies take top priority, even above scheduled appointments.
Situations that are deemed an emergency include:
- Deep cuts or broken bones
- Bleeding
- Ingestion of toxins or poisons
- Violent vomiting or bloody diarrhea
- Being hit by a car
- Difficulty breathing

Urgent Care Protocol – Alford Avenue Veterinary Hospital
When your pet has a condition that’s not life threatening but can’t wait for a regular appointment, it is designated as “urgent care.”
If you think your pet needs urgent care treatment, call us at 205.823.6002. Once we know the nature of the critical care situation, we’ll work to get your pet treated between scheduled appointments. When you arrive at our veterinary hospital, the staff will advise you on the wait time.
